Review by Ornella De Nigris

Monday 28 March at 17:00

The sons of the Yellow River 江湖 儿女
Nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 71st edition of the Cannes Film Festival Children of the Yellow River is a melancholy tale in three acts that describes the major transformations of Chinese society from 2001 to 2018, following the unfortunate love story between Qiao (Zhao Tao) and gangster Liao Fan (Guo Bin).
The characteristic signature of director Jia Zhangke, Leone d’Oro in Venice with Still Life in 2006, brings to the big screen a profound reflection on contemporary China through the geography of the underworld: a reality populated by humble and marginalized individuals who are overwhelmed by the underworld, with its hierarchies and ruthless power games.

Monday 11 April at 17:00

Ala Changso 阿拉 姜 色
Chinese director of Tibetan origin, Sonthar Gyal presents Ala Changso in 2018. The film tells the bitter story of a Tibetan family – mother, father and son – who go on pilgrimage to the city of Lhasa, after discovering that the woman has a few days to live due to a serious illness. The boundless landscapes of Tibet are the backdrop to the exhausting and intense journey, bringing man and nature closer together in a present guided by destiny.
