Rome celebrates Earth Day

April 22nd is Earth Day, the day on which the environment and natural resources are celebrated with the aim of promoting the protection of planet Earth.

From 18 to 21 April 2024 in Rome there will be the Village for the Earth with concerts, shows, sports activities, educational workshops, activities for children, thematic meetings and artistic and cultural performances at the Galappatoio and the Terrazza del Pincio of Villa Borghese. The activities are free and will be available from 9.00 to 19.00 without the need for reservations. To find out about the Village for the Earth program, click HERE.

The day was created in 1970, a year after the oil platform accident near the coast of Santa Barbare in California which caused approximately ten million liters of oil into the sea. The disaster had strong consequences on public opinion, so much so that Gaylord Nelson, Democratic senator from Wisconsin, accused the US government of having spent billions of dollars on a senseless war, referring to that of Vietnam, instead of worrying about Earth’s problems.

The Earth Day movement began to grow to involve almost a billion people in 193 countries around the world in one year. Every year there are hundreds of demonstrations and events held on all continents. One of the ambitious goals of Earth Day is to plant over a billion trees around the world, to give something back to the Earth. The anniversary, established by the United Nations, aims to remind us that it is necessary to recover that original balance, to underline that this is the only planet we have and that we must defend it.
