Rome turns 2777 years old

On Sunday 21 April Rome celebrates its 2777th birthday. The legend has its roots in the time of Romulus, when he founded the city of Rome on 21 April 753 BC. Roman chronology descends from this date onwards, defined in fact with the Latin phrase Ab Urbe condita, or “from the foundation of the City”, which counts the years starting from this presumed foundation.

This year, on the occasion of this anniversary, the Municipal Rose Garden (Via di Valle Murcia 6, Rome) will reopen. You can admire 1200 varieties of roses, including botanical, ancient and modern. The Rose Garden will remain open until Sunday 16 June. Entrance is free from 8.30am to 7.30pm, with no reservation required. For further information, click HERE.

The Museums of Rome also organized four days of events, guided tours and workshops in the civic museums and archaeological sites. The event, from 19 to 22 April 2024, offers guided tours and workshops in the civic museums and archaeological sites of Rome Capital. At the Casino dei Principi in Villa Torlonia, a meeting with the artist Giancarla Frare highlights the profound relationship between her personal research and the archaeological heritage of the city. At the Museum of the Roman Republic and Garibaldi memory we get to the heart of the extraordinary experience of the Roman Republic of 1849 while at the Giovanni Barracco Museum of Ancient Sculpture the fascinating story of the birth of the Latin alphabet is told. The Roman historical group organized a series of events in the days preceding the big event, from 19 to 21 April at Circo Massimo and Fori Imperiali. Three days of Culture, History, Love and Tradition is the slogan of the cultural association which will give life to representations of ancient rites and festivals, gladiator shows and historical re-enactments.
